Zimbabwe: Emmerson Mnangagwa re-elected president for second term – Electoral Commission

The Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), Priscila Chigumba, officially revealed the outcomes of the country’s general election in Harare on Sunday, proclaiming Emmerson Mnangagwa as the victorious candidate.

« Now, therefore, I Priscila Chigumba the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission in terms of section 110 subsection 3 do hereby declare that Mnangagwa Emmerson of ZANU-PF has received 2,350,711 votes out of 4,468,730 valid votes cast which are more than half the number of valid votes cast in the presidential election, » said Priscila Chigumba, Chairperson of Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

 »Therefore, Mnangagwa Emmerson of the ZANU-PF party is declared jury-elected president of the Republic of Zimbabwe with the effect from 26 August 2023, » she continued.

Emmerson Mnangagwa won the ZANU-PF party’s election with 52.6% of the votes. The other candidates received the following percentages: Wilbert Archibald Mubaiwa of NPC got 1.2%, Muzorewa Gwinyai Henry of UANC received 0.2%, Mwonzora Douglas of MDCT got 0.6%, Valerio Elisabeth of UZA received 0.2%, and Wilson Harry Peter of DOP got 0.2%.

The election process took place on Wednesday and Thursday, during which Zimbabwean citizens cast their votes to select a new president and parliament. The election held significant importance in gauging the popularity of Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF party, which has held power for 43 years.

According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), Nelson Chamisa, the primary competitor to Mnangagwa and the leader of the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party, secured 44 per cent of the total presidential votes.
