A drone captured scenes of total devastation across Mount Parnitha National Park, known as the ‘lungs of Athens’, outside the capital on Tuesday, following a series of wildfires in the area which burned over several days.

At least half the mountain range, which rises to 1,413 metres (4,636 feet), was burned prompting many evacuations of nearby residents.

Over 600 firefighters, supported by water-dropping planes and helicopters from various European countries, were fighting the remains of three large wildfires.

Mount Parnitha is a wildlife sanctuary hosting over 1,000 species of flora and fauna.
