Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku received a hero’s welcome from around 5,000 fans as he landed at Ciampino airport on Tuesday to begin a season-long loan move to Serie A club AS Roma.
Footage shows Lukaku greeting ecstatic Roma fans after disembarking from a private jet, reportedly piloted by the club’s owner Dan Friedkin.
Lukaku joins Roma after Premier League side Chelsea accepted a six million euro loan offer for the Belgian ace.
Last season Lukaku played for Inter Milan on loan. He played in 37 matches, scored 14 goals, made 7 assists and won the Italian Cup and Super Cup.
The 30-year-old wanted to leave Chelsea in the summer and received offers from Al Hila in Saudi Arabia, but decided to stay in Europe after a telephone conversation with Roma coach Jose Mourinho, who he had previously worked with at Stamford Bridge and Manchester United.
After leaving Ciampino airport, Lukaku underwent a medical examination that preceded the signing of his contract with Roma.
