During British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly’s visit to China, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin emphasized that affairs relating to Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet are China’s internal affairs, asserting that ‘other countries have no right to interfere’, speaking during a daily press briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.
« The two sides will have in-depth communication on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of mutual interest, » he started. « Affairs relating to Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet are China’s internal affairs, where other countries have no right to interfere.”
The remark came after UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said he would raise issues such as Xinjiang and Hong Kong during his visit to China.
Cleverly’s visit comes as the UK parliament has, for the first time, referred to Taiwan as an ‘independent country’, a statement which the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson said it ‘distorts the facts and is totally misleading’.
« We urge the relevant committee of the British parliament to abide by the one-China principle, observe international law and the norms governing international relations, respect China’s core interests, stop sending wrong signals to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces, » he added.
The spokesperson also commented on the meeting between the Chinese Premier Li Qiang and the US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, saying that Li Qiang pointed out that China and the USA should strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation, reduce friction and confrontation, jointly promote the recovery of the world economy and meet global challenges.
During the daily briefing, the spokesperson also commented on India’s strong protest over China’s latest edition of the map, as well as Meta-linked accounts to the Chinese ‘Spamouflage’ campaign.
