A Palestinian teenager was shot dead by an off-duty police officer on Wednesday, after he reportedly attacked a Israeli resident in his 20s with a knife in Jerusalem.
Footage captured the boy’s body at the Old City’s Shivtei Israel light rail station, where the incident took place, as police and emergency services worked in the cordoned area.
According to local media, the victim of the stabbing was ‘moderately wounded’ and taken to hospital, while the teenager, a resident of East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Hanina, was fatally shot.
Media reported that the policeman who shot the teenager was travelling on a train when he witnessed the incident, and immediately got off and shot the alleged assaulter.
The incident came amid rising tensions between Israeli authorities and Palestians. The United Nations has reportedly warned that 2023 may become the deadliest year for Palestinians in the Israeli conflict since it started recording fatalities.
