« A strong military apparatus can be seen being assembled in preparation for the 43rd Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta on Sunday.
The event, scheduled from September 5 to 7 in the Indonesian capital, will gather the primary leaders of the region’s nations along with their partners, including Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang, who confirmed his attendance last week.
In addition to dozens of armoured vehicles and hundreds of soldiers, footage shows the first preparations inside the media centre for the event, which will welcome thousands of delegates and journalists next week.
The conference takes place amid growing doubts about the unity of the bloc, which in addition to the original members of the intergovernmental alliance (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam), will also bring together the Asian countries that have free trade agreements with the alliance (China, India, South Korea, Japan, and Australia).
The most significant differences in global geopolitics right now are found within this group. »
