‘Happy about all the memes’ – German govt spox sets his sights on internet jokes about Scholz’s eye patch

« German federal government spokesperson Steffen Hebestreit commented on a number of jokes circulating on the internet that followed the release of a picture of Chancellor Olaf Scholz wearing an eye patch, after injuring his face while jogging.
In a press conference held in Berlin on Monday, Hebestreit confirmed that due to Scholz’s eye injury, he would be wearing an eye patch in the coming days.
« He [Chancellor Olaf Scholz] is doing well given the circumstances », announced the spokesperson. « I have to get used to the fact that he will be appearing with an eye patch in the next few days. I am happy about all the memes that will reach me in the next few minutes, hours and days », he added.
Over the weekend, Scholz reportedly suffered minor injuries when he fell while running, leading to the cancellation of a few of his scheduled appointments. On Monday, he shared a photo on X, formerly known as Twitter, where he could be seen with a black eye patch covering his right eye, accompanied by noticeable red scrape marks around it. »
