« Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky decided to replace Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, citing the need for ‘new approaches’ and nominating Rustem Umerov, who runs Ukraine’s State Property Fund, as the new defence minister during his speech from Kiev on Sunday.
« I have decided to replace the Minister of Defense of Ukraine. Oleksiy Reznikov has gone through more than 550 days of full-scale war, » started Zelensky.
On Monday, Reznikov announced that he had submitted his resignation letter to the chairman of parliament.
« I believe that the Ministry needs new approaches and other formats of interaction with both the military and society at large. Now Rustem Umerov should lead the Ministry, » he added.
The Ukrainian president called on the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to support Mr. Umerov’s candidacy, stating that he is well-known to the Parliament and ‘does not require any additional introductions’.
The dismissal came as Reznikov faced a number of scandals at the Ministry of Defense after media outlets claimed that he was responsible for inflated prices for army procurement. »
