« Gabon’s coup leader General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema was sworn in as the ‘transitional’ president at a ceremony in the capital Libreville on Monday.
Footage shows Oligui Nguema taking the oath of office as Gabon’s interim leader before the constitutional court and the inauguration ceremony, less than a week after soldiers toppled President Ali Bongo Ondimba and put him under house arrest.
A group of army officers led by General Brice Oligui Nguema seized power in Gabon on Wednesday, cancelling the election results.
The African Union has suspended the country from all activities and condemned the takeover, while the United Nations and France, the country’s former colonial ruler, also condemned the coup.
Bongo – whose family has held power for over 50 years – was declared the winner of the elections, with nearly two-thirds of the vote. The country’s opposition claimed the victory was fraudulent.
The developments come just over a month after a similar military coup in Niger. »
