‘Our region is not immune to global challenges’ – Widodo opens ASEAN summit in Jakarta

« Indonesian President Joko Widodo gave a speech at ASEAN opening ceremony in Jakarta on Tuesday.
Widodo said that ASEAN region “is not immune to various global challenges, and specially geopolitical conflicts in the Indo-Pacific”, and called for a “stable and prosperous” relationship among member states.
Myanmar’s civil struggle, the disputed South China Sea and the rivalry between United States and China are some of the topics that are expected to be in the agenda.
Founded in 1967, ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Leaders from the ten ASEAN member countries, along with other non-ASEAN partners, convened for the 43rd Summit, scheduled from September 5 to 7. »
