« Hundreds of thousands of Shiite Muslims gathered in Karbala on Tuesday for the Arbaeen procession to mourn the death of Imam Hussain who was the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.
Footage shows a significant gathering of Shiite Muslims participating in one of the most important rituals in their faith. They were seen holding signs with colourful designs that formed verses from the Quran.
This initiative captured the attention of those present, particularly in the wake of recent incidents where the Quran was burned in several European countries, notably Denmark and Sweden. These acts ignited widespread anger and outrage among Muslims worldwide. The Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq and other member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation denounced these actions and called upon Sweden and Denmark to take measures to prevent such practices in European countries.
Local media reports indicate that this year’s Arbaeen procession is the largest in recent memory, with over 14 million people converging on Karbala from both within and outside Iraq to take part in this significant event.
The annual Arbaeen pilgrimage signifies the conclusion of a 40-day mourning period after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shia Imam, and his devoted companions who were martyred at the Battle of Karbala during Muharram. This pilgrimage takes the form of a walk towards the shrine of Imam Hussein and his companions in Karbala and stands as one of the most powerful symbols of unity within the Shiite community. »
