« Captain of the Spanish National Football Team Alvaro Morata read a team’s statement condemning the behaviour of Federation President Luis Rubiales during a press conference held in Las Rozas, Madrid, on Monday, as the team held its first training session of the season.
« We want to reject what we consider unacceptable behaviour on the part of Mr Rubiales, who has not lived up to the institution he represents. We stand firmly and clearly on the side of the values that sport represents », said Morata in behalf of the team.
« Spanish football must be an engine of respect, inspiration, equality and diversity. He must set an example in his behaviour, both on and off the field », the team captain added.
Rubiales has faced widespread criticism from the football community after he kissed Spanish forward Jenni Hermoso during the World Cup’s victory celebrations, as Hermoso admitted the gesture was not consensual.
FIFA has reportedly imposed a 90-day suspension on the Federation President, while the Spanish Ministry of Sport is reportedly considering suspending Rubiales for up to two years. »
