‘Diaoyu Islands and affiliated islands are China’s inherent territory’ – MOFA spox responds to Tokyo’s protest over new map

« China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing does not accept Japan’s protest against the new-released official map of China, which portrays the Senkaku Islands, also known as the Diaoyu Islands, as part of China’s territory, speaking during her daily briefing in Beijing on Wednesday.
“The Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islands are China’s inherent territory, and it is only natural that China’s map marks the Diaoyu Islands as Chinese territory. China does not accept Japan’s so-called protest,” the spokesperson said.
The islands are located in the East China Sea, 170 kilometres northeast of Taiwan. They are the subject of a territorial dispute among Japan, China, and Taiwan. Tokyo currently controls the islands, while Beijing and Taipei both lay claim to them.
Earlier on Monday, China released a new national map, outraging many of China’s neighbours, as it pictured territories in the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Russia and India as part of China.
During the presser, the spokesperson also commented on recent press statements about tritium content within the normal range in Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water.
“The composition of Fukushima nuclear-contaminated water is complex. Even after purification, it still contains dozens of radionuclides, such as carbon-14, cobalt-60, strontium-90 and so on. No matter what you call it, it will not let the nuclear radionuclides in the contaminated water disappear, which the Japanese side needs to confirm,” she added.
Tokyo began the release of more than one million metric tons of the water used to cool Fukushima’s damaged reactors, starting with 7,800 cubic metres over 17 days from Thursday, August 24. »
