« Judges at the E. Barrett Prettyman United States Courthouse handed down a 22-year prison sentence to Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the right-wing Proud Boys group, over the alleged role in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riots, on Tuesday in Washington DC.
Footage features a gathering of individuals both supporting and opposing Tarrio, engaging in heated discussions while holding signs and Tarrio’s legal team arriving at the courthouse.
« While we respect the judge’s sentences, we respectfully disagree. There will be a day and a time that the appeal will come and we expect the appeal to come soon, » said Nayib Hassan, one of Tarrio’s lawyers, during a press briefing following the verdict.
According to local media reports, even though he was not physically present at the site during the event, Tarrio was considered by the judges to be the main instigator of the January 6, 2021 incident at the US Capitol. This incident caused a temporary halt in the certification of Joe Biden’s election win and saw supporters of former President Trump storming the Capitol building.
Furthermore, it is reported that more than 1,106 individuals have been arrested in connection with the Capitol incident, including four members affiliated with the Proud Boys group. »
