« The family of Adama Traore organized a rally on Tuesday at Place de la Republique in Paris to protest the dismissal of the case surrounding the 24-year-old’s death.
During the rally, Assa Traore, sister of Adama Traore, addressed the crowd, expressing her determination to continue the fight for justice after his brother died in police custody in 2016.
« They [the gendarmes] are going to say that three of them went up on Adama Traore. They’re going to say that my little brother told them he couldn’t breathe… But it’s too late, written statements are there », said Assa Traore. She announced that the family had already filed an appeal and was prepared to take the case to the Supreme Court.
Adama Traore died in police custody on July 19, 2016, during an identity check conducted by the gendarmerie. While the gendarmes involved claimed that Adama Traore had suffered a heart attack, his autopsy reportedly indicated asphyxiation as the cause of death.
The dismissal of the case by magistrates on September 1, 2023, marked the culmination of a contentious investigation that has symbolized the fight against police violence and racial injustice in France. »
