« White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre delivered a briefing in Washington DC on Wednesday, in which se addressed the recent Russian airstrikes in Donestk region and she announced a new package of security assistance to Ukraine.
This package includes additional ammunition for artillery, HIMAR (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) systems, Javelin anti-tank missile systems, anti-armour systems, tank ammunition for Abrams tanks, and air defence systems., Jean-Pierre confirmed.
« The Kremlin could end this war at any time by withdrawing its forces from Ukraine and stopping its brutal attacks. Until it does, the US, our allies and partners will stand united with Ukraine for as long as it takes », the spokesperson said.
Earlier, Ukraine’s defence ministry claimed a local outdoor market had been hit by a Russian missile, killing at least 16 people and injuring another 32. President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned what he called a ‘deliberate’ attack on the ‘peaceful’ city.
Russia has not commented on the claims made and has previously strongly denied targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow. »
