« A hole in the Great Wall of China could be seen on Thursday, after construction workers reportedly used an excavator to create a shortcut in Youyu County, central Shanxi province.
Drone footage shows the large pathway through the wall, fencing across the gap and other shots of the famous landmark.
Local police stated that two people had been arrested, with the Youyu County Public Security Bureau claiming that a 38-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman had caused ‘irreparable damage’ by digging a larger gap in an existing cavity.
The area, known as the 32nd Great Wall, is protected at the provincial level as a historical and cultural site.
The Great Wall itself has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. It was built and then rebuilt many times from around 220 BC until the Ming Dynasty in the 1600s, as a defensive fortification. »
