« Indonesian President Joko Widodo held the closing remarks at the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta on Thursday, mentioning that he was able ‘to sense the optimism and positive energy’ of all leaders present at the three-day summit.
« I can analyse and say this reinforces our hopes of continuing and ever creating a peaceful, stable, and promising region. Let us strengthen the Indo-Pacific as a region of peace and inclusivity; this is the key foundation that will bring ASEAN to a better future for the people of the region and the world, » he said.
Widodo mentioned that 12 summit meetings were held during the event, producing 90 outcome documents and several agreements between partners during this year’s ASEAN Summit.
But our work is not done yet, ASEAN work is impossible to be completed in only one chairmanship. We will continue to face complexities of global challenges, to that end we must continue to work hand in hand navigating the changes in two opportunities, navigating in collaborations navigating exclusively into inclusivity and navigating differences into unity, » the president stated.
Towards the end of his speech, Widodo handed over the chairmanship to Laos’ Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, as Vientiane will host the 2024 summit.
Founded in 1967, ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. »
