« Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum was elected the Morena Party’s candidate for the country’s 2024 presidential election during an event organised by the group on Wednesday night in Mexico City.
« The truth is that I feel very proud and honoured. We have been part of this movement since its foundation, and from here, I want to say with pride and honour that it is an honour to be with Obrador, » Sheinbaum said.
Many members of the Morena party and other candidates for the group’s primary election, including Manuel Velasco and Gerardo Fernandez Norona, were seen at the event holding hands on stage with Sheinbaum once the announcement was made.
« We are going to win in 2024! We are going to win the deputies! We are going to win the senatorial seats! We are going to win the governorships! And there will be a president of the republic, and it will be the fourth transformation, » she declared during her speech.
Alfonso Durazo, President of the National Council of the Morena Party, explained during the event that the former mayor of Mexico City was elected following the results of five surveys conducted nationwide.
According to local media reports, former Mexican Foreign Affairs Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, who came in second in Morena’s polls, complained about potential irregularities in the process and said that it should be redone.
The country’s population will head to the polls on June 2, 2024, to elect its new president. With Xochitl Galvez named as opposition candidate, Mexico is set to elect its first female president. »
