« G20 members condemned the war in Ukraine and its impacts, French President Emmanuel Macron claimed during a speech at the G20 Summit in New Delhi on Sunday.
« G20 members condemn the war in Ukraine and its impact. We have spoken at length about the economic and food consequences of this war, precisely to keep the planet united, » Macron said.
« The G20 as a whole is also committed to a principle of just and lasting peace in Ukraine based on the charter of the United Nations and on the principles of territorial integrity that Russia has obviously taken on board, » he added.
His remarks come as the president reportedly affirmed during the summit that the group was founded to solve international economic issues and was not the place to expect diplomatic progress regarding the Ukrainian war.
According to media reports, Macron highlighted that the joint G20 declaration was not a diplomatic victory for Russia.
On Saturday, the attending leaders agreed to a joint declaration acknowledging the situation in Ukraine while also calling on states ‘to refrain from the threat or use of force to seek territorial acquisition’, without explicitly singling out Russia for its military offensive.
Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oleh Nikolenko wrote on X, formally known as Twitter, that the G20 ‘has nothing to be proud of’ regarding its positions on the Ukraine conflict, while Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called the results of the summit ‘critical’ for maintaining ‘a balance of interests’ in global economics.
The group of the world’s 20 leading economies also welcomed the African Union as a permanent member. Modi formally closed the gathering on Sunday, passing on the presidency to Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s Brazil. »
