« Fierce clashes erupted between police officers and protesters on Sunday in Santiago as thousands rallied through the capital to pay tribute to the victims of General Augusto Pinochet’s regime on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the 1973 military coup against President Salvador Allende.
Footage shows black-clad protesters throwing objects at police, while security forces responded by firing tear gas and using water cannons against the rioters.
The video also features people marching with flags, banners, and signs, as well as signs featuring images of the victims of the dictatorship.
According to local media reports, three people were detained following the incidents. It is also reported that some mausoleums were damaged at the city’s general cemetery. Leftist President Gabriel Boric joined the annual march which was attended by relatives of the victim’s of Pinochet’s regime and had started out peacefully.
During Pinochet’s regime in Chile, approximately 3,200 people were reportedly killed by Chilean security forces or disappeared. »
