« The ‘Tribute in Light’ memorial illuminated the skies of Manhattan, New York, on Monday, marking the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Footage shows the tribute, which consists of 88 searchlights arranged into two vertical columns of light, which represent the Twin Towers, reaching over 6 kilometres into the sky. The light beams shone from dusk until dawn on the night of 11 September.
Located six blocks south of the former site of the World Trade Center (WTC), the installation serves as a memorial for those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.
The Twin Towers were destroyed by two hijacked planes in 2001, and the installation was introduced six months after the tragic event. Today, it remains a part of the annual commemorations.
The 9/11 attacks killed 2,977 people. 19 hijackers flew four planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, three of them hit the towers while the fourth came down in Somerset Country, Pennsylvania, following a passenger fightback. »
