« United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres spoke at the opening of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) summit in New York on Monday and emphasised the current necessity for a « rescue plan » to ensure the achievement of the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda.
« Instead of leaving no one behind, we risk leaving the SDGs behind. So, Excellencies, the SDGs need a global rescue plan, » declared the Secretary-General at the start of his speech.
In his speech, he stressed the need for various reforms to facilitate such rescues, including changes to the international financial system, which he described as « outdated, dysfunctional, and unfair. »
In the first part of his speech, Antonio Guterres listed the first three steps to reverse the current situation: Eradicating hunger, accelerating the use of renewable energies, and stimulating the use of digital technologies.
« We must take action on hunger. In our world of plenty, hunger is a shocking stain on humanity, and an epic human rights violation. It is an indictment of every one of us that millions of people are starving in this day and age » declared the UN Secretary General.
In the latter part of his speech, he outlined three additional urgent actions: The themes were inclusive quality education, work opportunities and social security, and the banning of war as an international political tool.
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), sometimes referred to as the Millennium Goals or Global Goals, depending on the institution promoting them, comprise a total of 17 goals. They were established in 2015 following climate negotiations. However, much like the climate issue, he noted that the SDG targets are significantly lagging where they should be. He mentioned that not even 15 per cent of these targets are on track for achievement. »
