« German Chancellor Olaf Scholz delivered a speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, where he warned against ‘phoney solutions’ in the quest for peace in Ukraine.
« We should be aware of phoney solutions which represent peace in name only. For peace without freedom is called oppression. Peace without justice is called dictatorship, » said the Chancellor.
He emphasised the importance of freedom and justice in achieving true peace, calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to put an end to the war.
« Moscow, too, must finally understand that. For let us not forget that Russia is responsible for this war, and it is Russia’s president who can end it at any time with one single order, » said Scholz.
Scholz expressed his support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ call for reforms within the UN Security Council, highlighting the need for the council to better reflect the reality of a multipolar world.
« Russia has to understand that we, the states of the UN are serious about our principles. In the multipolar world of the 21st century, we do not see a place anymore for revisionism and imperialism, » he added.
The Chancellor’s speech at the UN General Assembly took place amid discussions on critical global issues, with leaders from various countries, including the United States, Turkey, Brazil, Japan, and Iran, addressing the assembly during this annual diplomatic event.
A multitude of pressing global challenges, including Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, escalating climate emergencies, and the disruptive impact of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence top the leaders’ agenda.
The high-level week of the UNGA’s 78th session officially commenced on September 18, 2023. The session has brought together approximately 140 world leaders in New York for their annual assembly. »
