« Russia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya referred to the UN Security Council meeting held on Wednesday, with the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, as ‘nothing more than as spectacle’.
« Violating the presidency of the Security Council’s working practices has a cost to the credibility of the Security Council, which is trying to be turned into a stage for a one-man stand-up show », Nebenzya remarked, adding that « it is clear to everyone, at least to many, that today’s meeting is nothing more than a spectacle ».
Russia’s UN representative also said that Zelensky’s personal non-attendance at the UN Security Council in the past was disrespectful to the organisation. « Western members of the Security Council pushed through Volodymyr Zelensky’s participation in council meetings via video link three times, a blatant disregard for the authority of this key organisation », he said.
Zelensky arrived in New York on Monday, where he is scheduled to meet with over 140 world leaders during the high-level week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. During several gatherings, Zelensky appaealed for increased international support amid the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict. »
