« Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused the Indian government of being involved in the killing of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar during a statement in the Canadian Parliament on Tuesday.
He revealed that Canadian security agencies have been « actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Indian government and Nijjar’s killing. »
« Last week, at the G20, I brought them personally and directly to Prime Minister Modi in no uncertain terms. Any involvement of a foreign government in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil is an unacceptable violation of our sovereignty », added Trudeau.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent Sikh separatist leader who campaigned for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland called Khalistan in the North Indian Punjab region, was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Vancouver suburb in June. India has denied any involvement in his killing.
As a result of this allegation, Canada expelled an Indian diplomat, while India also expelled a Canadian diplomat in retaliation. Trudeau urged the Indian government to cooperate with Canada in getting ‘to the bottom of the matter’ and reiterated the importance of respecting international law and democratic principles. »
