« The anti-LGBT ‘One Million March for Children’ rally, which claimed against inclusivity education in public schools, was met with a counter-protest in Ottawa on Wednesday.
Police officers kept both protests separate, with one side displaying messages such as ‘Leave our kids alone’, while the other waved LGBT flags and signs reading ‘Protect trans kids’, among other slogans.
« I think that to teach that to the kids, is that appropriate? There is an age limit for that. And if they can’t respect that, this is a failure of society », said one of the protesters.
According to local media, ‘One Million March For Children’ rallies were called across Canada. Organisers reportedly claim not to be anti-LGBT, but to ‘protect’ children from ‘gender ideology’.
Canadian President Justin Trudeau publicly opposed the rallies through social media. « Transphobia, homophobia, and biphobia have no place in this country. We strongly condemn this hate and its manifestations, and we stand united in support of 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians across the country – you are valid and you are valued », Trudeau wrote. »
