« Spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wang Wenbin affirmed during a press briefing on Monday in Beijing that ‘China has indisputable sovereignty over Huangyan Island,’ also known as Scarborough Shoal, and its surrounding waters following installing a floating barrier in the South China Sea.
“On September 22nd, a government ship belonging to the Philippine Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Bureau entered the waters near Huangyan Island without permission from the Chinese side and attempted to collide with the Huangyan Island Lagoon. The Chinese maritime police have taken necessary measures in accordance with the law to exercise professional restraint in the operations related to the interception and expulsion of Philippine vessels,” he explained.
The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs reportedly reacted to the Chinese government’s decision, affirming that the barrier was a violation of international law and that the country would take appropriate measures to protect its sovereignty.
Following EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis’ visit to Tsinghua University on Monday, in which he reportedly called for a more balanced economic relationship with China, Wenbin stated that Beijing is an important partner of the European Union in maintaining financial stability and affirmed that the country is not a source of risk ‘but rather a steadfast force.’
“China continues to adhere to the principle of the rule of law. Protect the legitimate rights and interests of individuals and organizations in accordance with the law. We will continue to provide a market-oriented, legalized, and internationalized business environment for enterprises from various countries to operate legally in China,” Wenbin declared.
As Washington and Hanoi are reportedly in talks to reach what could possibly be the largest arms transfer in history between the two countries, the spokesperson mentioned that Beijing hopes that relevant countries will abandon ‘hegemony and Cold War’ thinking and not harm regional peace.
“Seeking stability, promoting cooperation, and seeking development are the common aspirations of Asian countries. China hopes that when developing bilateral relations and conducting military cooperation, relevant countries will effectively abide by the basic norms of international relations,” he said.
When commenting on the reports that claim that Washington illegally entered Chinese technology company Huawei’s servers in 2009, Wenbin said that the US uses a pretext of national security to suppress Chinese high-tech enterprises.
“We condemn the irresponsible actions of the US government. The facts once again indicate that the US government, on the one hand, engages in pervasive cyber theft against China, bringing huge risks to China’s cybersecurity, and on the other hand, continuously creates and spreads false information about the ‘Chinese hacker attack theory’, which is a typical and hypocritical political manipulation,” Wenbin said.
“However, relevant reports indicate that even through theft, the US government has not found the so-called ‘evidence’, which fully exposes that the US government’s suppression of Chinese enterprises is not due to the so-called ‘national security’, but when they are unable to lead in normal competition, attempting to obstruct the development of Chinese enterprises through illegal and unfair means,” he added.
During the briefing, the spokesperson also mentioned that China, Japan, and South Korea are close neighbours and important cooperation partners, and strengthening trilateral cooperation is in the common interests of the three parties, as representatives of the foreign ministries of the three countries will reportedly meet on Tuesday to discuss ways to facilitate cooperation among them. »
