« Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hailed the Azerbaijani army’s ‘counter-terrorism measures’ outcome and called Armenia to hold peace talks with Azerbaijan, speaking at a press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev in Nakhchivan on Monday.
« Our Azerbaijani brothers have once again demonstrated the justice and mercy of the Turkish nation to the whole world. With the recent victory, windows of opportunity for normalization in the region have opened. I believe this opportunity should be seized, » he said.
Erdogan said that the Azerbaijani operation took place as Baku could not find a satisfactory resolution to ‘its legitimate and justified concerns’ over three years after the 2nd Karabakh war.
The Turkish president praised the relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan, calling them ‘unique’.
« We continue our efforts to strengthen our relations and cooperation as one nation and two states. The Shusha agreement signed with Mr President is a turning point in our relations », Erdogan said.
Before the press conference, the two leaders attended foundation-laying for Nakhchivan Gas Pipeline and signed three agreements in various spheres.
Year-long conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on Tuesday, September 19, with the beginning of Azerbaijan’s counter-terrorist operation in the region.
On Wednesday, Defence Ministry of the self-proclaimed NKR said that its authorities had decided to lay down arms for a ceasefire from 13:00 local time (09:00 GMT). Baku also announced the suspension of its ‘anti-terrorist measures’. »
