« The painting ‘Femme a la Montre,’ a masterpiece by Pablo Picasso, is currently on display at Sotheby’s Dubai in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) as seen in footage filmed on Monday. This exhibition marks the first time the painting has been shown outside of the United States in over 50 years.
The portrait, entitled Woman in Watch, was painted in 1932 and is estimated to be worth over $120 million.
« Well, we’ve estimated the work to be worth 120 million dollars. I think the keywords there were in access. It would be interesting to see if it ends up being sold, but I think it has all the potential in the world to surpass the current record for a Picasso auction, which is around 180 million dollars, » believes Julian Dawes, senior vice-president and head of Impressionist and Modern Art at Sotheby’s in New York.
According to Dawes, the work is the most valuable that Sotheby’s has ever sent to the region and is the most important 20th-century painting to be auctioned on the modern market.
« Dubai and UEA have become a centre for arts and culture worldwide. And so we think it’s very important to bring a masterpiece of this quality here, where the community is so engaged and so enthusiastic, » explained Sotheby’s director of impressionist and modern art.
The exceptionally rare 1932 portrait of Marie-Therese Walter, the French model and lover of Pablo Picasso, is available for public on Monday and will also be on display on Tuesday, September 26, from 10 am to 7 pm. »
