« Italian politicians and the general public paid tribute to the late former President Giorgio Napolitano at Palazzo Madama, the headquarters of the country’s Senate, Sunday.
Among those who came to bid farewell were the current President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and several former prime ministers, including Mario Draghi, Mario Monti, Giuseppe Conte, and Paolo Gentiloni, as seen in the footage.
« (Napolitano) is a symbol and an example for all those who work in the institutions, and I can say that he has been an extraordinary pro-European. Giorgio Napolitano always had the idea that the development and future of Italy and its strength must necessarily always be within the horizon of a more united and stronger Europe. We will not forget his great lesson, » said the ex-Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.
« I suddenly felt charged with assuming a great responsibility to face, together with President Napolitano, a crisis that, according to the opinion of many, could be lethal for the Italian State. I have learned a lot (from Napolitano), and today, all that comes back to my mind, » said Mario Monti, who was prime minister during the presidency of Napolitano.
President Emeritus of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano passed away at the age of 98 on September 22. Civil state funerals will be held on Tuesday, September 26, in the Chamber of Deputies, Palazzo Montecitorio. »
