South Korea, China, Japan hold high-level talks eyeing potential trilateral summit

« Senior diplomats from China, South Korea, and Japan held trilateral talks on Tuesday in Seoul as the three nations are resuming their meetings this year following a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Footage shows South Korean Deputy Foreign Minister Chung Byung-won, Japanese Senior Deputy Foreign Minister Takehiro Funakoshi, and China’s Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Nong Rong posing for pictures and getting together inside a conference room for the meeting.
According to local media reports, citing Seoul’s foreign ministry, during the meeting the sides agreed that the countries’ leaders will convene at the « earliest convenient time. »
On Monday, Spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Wang Wenbin affirmed that the three countries are close neighbours and important cooperation partners, and strengthening trilateral cooperation is in the common interests of the three parties.
The last summit with officials of the three countries was held in 2019. »
