« German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev discussed oil supplies from the Central Asian former Soviet republic to Germany and the war in Ukraine at a meeting in Berlin on Thursday.
« Kazakhstan is an important partner for us in expanding our supply routes, for example when importing crude oil, and in making us independent of Russian energy supplies, » Scholz said.
In turn, Tokayev assured that Kazakhstan is ready to increase oil supplies to Germany. The president stressed that Kazakhstan has shipped 500,000 metric tonnes of oil to Germany this year through Russia’s Druzhba pipeline.
The chancellor continued to comment on the war in Ukraine. « President Tokayev and I also discussed the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the German position is very clear – the Russian war of aggression is a blatant violation of international law and so the demand is clear that Putin must cancel his plans and withdraw print, » the chancellor stated.
Scholz thanked Tokayev for his alleged support in circumventing anti-Russian sanctions, stating that « the Kazakh government supports us in preventing sanctions evasion and has decided on active countermeasures. »
‘Kazakhstan has unambiguously stated that it will follow the sanctions regime,’ Tokayev reportedly said for his part during the press conference.
Later in the week, Germany is set to host the leaders of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzebkistan, marking the first time a EU country brings the leaders of the former Soviet republics to the same table. Kazakhstan accounts for more than 80 percent of Germany’s total trade with the Central Asian region. »
