« Morocco and East African trio were announced to host the 2025 and 2027 Nations Cups, respectively, on Wednesday following a press conference in Cairo of the executive committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), which runs the sport on the continent and organises the biennial tournament.
Footage shows CAF President Patric Motsepe announcing the presiding countries during the press conference after the subsequent delivery.
After Zambia, Algeria, and a joint proposal from Benin and Nigeria withdrew before the CAF executive committee voting, Morocco won by default.
Nearly 40 years after the previous one in 1988, Morocco is hosting the most-viewed athletic event in Africa for the second time.
The finals will return to the region in 2027 for the first time since 1976 according to the United East African proposal.
« It’s fantastic to win the bid. East Africa has not hosted the Cup of Nations since 1976, I was not even born, and now we have a big responsibility, a big job to convince CAF to bring AFCON to East Africa 2027″, said President of Football Kenya Federation Nick Mwendwa.
The East African trio won the CAF executive committee’s vote over Botswana, Egypt, and Senegal. The other applicant, Algeria, withdrew on Tuesday. »
