« Residents of Rotterdam reacted on Friday to a tragic shooting that occurred the day before, claiming three lives outside a hospital and a private residence.
Footage shows the heart-wrenching scene of people, including children, placing flowers at the locations where the tragic shooting took place as a way to express their deep sadness and condolences.
The incident, which unfolded on Thursday, involved an unidentified 32-year-old man who fatally attacked one of his neighbours, a 39-year-old woman, and her 14-year-old daughter. He then set fire to the victims’ house.
Following this horrifying act, the assailant proceeded to the Erasmus MC hospital in Rotterdam’s city centre, where he fatally shot a 43-year-old professor at the Erasmus Medical Centre. He then entered the hospital and discharged his firearm.
“Someone was shooting in the next building. So, there is a lot of police, a lot of ambulances. There was a doctor running through the building. It was very, very, very annoying. It was very strange. We had to wait in our building. We couldn’t move anywhere. The police came to say that we have to stay there. Don’t move any place. So, we had to wait for five, six hours,” said Diego Diaz, a nurse at Erasmus Hospital, describing the chaotic scene.
The attacker proceeded to set fire to the hospital library and attempted to escape through the rear of the building, where he was ultimately arrested by the police.
“So, I don’t feel safe anymore at the moment. I have to feel more comfortable with the situation. But it’s not, you cannot say that it’s not a safe city,” shared Adrie, a resident.
The identity of the victims and the shooter have not been released pending further investigation into the motive.
As investigations continue, the identities of both the victims and the shooter remain undisclosed. It has been reported in the media that the assailant was a student at Erasmus University, which has affiliations with the hospital. »
