« Japan’s Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ichiro Miyashita, during a press conference in Tokyo, on Friday, urged the country’s citizens to consume more scallops in order to balance import suspension measures.
« The per capita consumption of scallops in Japan in 2022 will be about seven scallops per person, but if all the scallops affected by the import control measures are consumed in Japan, an additional five to seven scallops will be consumed per year. So, if you will add another five scallops, the annual consumption will become 12 scallops, so we calculate that you should eat one scallop per month », the minister explained.
« This is truly a national movement and we have received the cooperation of many of you. In this regard, I would like to thank you again from the bottom of my heart. We ask for the continued cooperation of the public and consumers in further expanding consumption of Japanese marine products affected by the import suspension measures, » Miyashita concluded.
Japan completed the first round of nuclear wastewater discharge from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean. The decision sparked criticism internationally with China banning Japanese seafood export.
The Fukushima nuclear power plant suffered a catastrophic meltdown following a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami in 2011. »
