« Hundreds of demonstrators gathered at the Place de la Republique in Paris on Saturday for a rally in support of French law enforcement agencies.
Protesters were seen waving French flags and chanting ‘France loves the police’ as they were addressed by former politician, media personality and organiser of the rally, Jean Messiha.
« Scum on the streets constantly harassing police officers. Scum who are supported by the anti-nationalist far left, who are no longer fit to be called left and far left, now they must be called traitors, » Messiha shouted to the crowd.
France has seen a wave of anger and anti-police sentiment in recent months following the death of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk during a traffic stop in June. The incident, described by many as an example of police brutality, sparked widespread protests across the country.
Last weekend, on September 23, left-wing activists held nationwide demonstrations to denounce racism and police brutality.
“When I saw the demonstration on September 23, with its completely mind-boggling slogans like ‘everyone hates the police’, ‘police violence’, ‘systemic racism’, what kind of country are we living in? » Messiha added.
Other speakers addressed the demonstrators during Saturday’s rally in Paris, including an activist named Sophie, a spokesperson for the ‘Angry Police Wives’ group.
« Today, public order is being totally flouted. We have a country that is falling apart. Everyday life is riddled with violence and incivility, and near-death experiences are becoming the order of the day for our police forces,” she said.
Similar demonstrations in support of law enforcement agencies reportedly took place in 12 other cities across France, including in Montpellier and Marseille. »
