« Hundreds of people participated in a march held on Tuesday in Lampedusa to honour the victims of the deadly shipwreck that took place off the coast of the island 10 years ago.
Footage shows people wearing shirts reading ‘protect people, not borders’, with signs, flowers and a banner. The video also features the moment that security officers of the island’s border control throw a crown of flowers from a ship to pay tribute to those who died in the shipwreck.
On October 3, 2013, a boat carrying asylum seekers from Eritrea and Somalia capsized off Rabbit Island, killing 368 people. It is also reported that only 155 people survived the accident.
Lampedusa, located only 180 kilometres (110 miles) away from North Africa, is the destination for hundreds of thousands of migrants trying to reach Europe.
This season has seen multiple shipwrecks off the coast of Italy. The Italian Interior Ministry has reported that over 120,000 undocumented individuals have arrived this year by sea, including 11,000 unaccompanied minors. Last month, Germany suspended a voluntary bilateral deal with Italy due to what it called ‘high migratory pressure’. »
