« Spain’s acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced during a news briefing in Madrid on Tuesday that he had been tasked by King Felipe VI to attempt to form a new government.
« As you know, I am appearing before you to inform you that I have accepted the assignment of the Head of State, His Majesty the King, as a candidate to be sworn in as ‘President of the Government’ before the ‘Cortes Generale’s, before the ‘Congress of Deputies’,” Sanchez said.
“I want to tell you that I do it with enthusiasm, with the enthusiasm of knowing that all of Spain can advance in these next few years with a progressive government,” he continued.
Sanchez also stated that he will be meeting with with different parliamentary parties in a bid to form a coalition in the coming days, with the exception of Santiago Abascal’s far-right Vox party.
The King’s ruling comes after the leader of the ‘People’s Party’ (PP) Alberto Nunez Feijoo failed in his second attempt on Friday to secure a government and take office following a snap general election in July.
Despite receiving the most votes in the elections, Feijoo has so far been unable to win enough support in parliament to secure an outright majority, even with the backing of the Vox party.
The failure of the conservative politician opens the door for socialist party leader Sanchez to return to power through an alliance with Basque and Catalan nationalist parties.
If the government cannot be formed by November 27, new parliamentary elections will be held on January 14. »
