« Chinese champion sprinter Xie Zhenye, who took gold at the Asian Games men’s 100 metres at the weekend, said he was also ‘very proud’ to receive a retroactive bronze medal from the Tokyo Olympics, during a press briefing in Hangzhou.
« My first feeling about tonight’s retroactive medal is that I am very proud. This is the first Olympic medal in China’s relay, » he said.
China’s 4x100m relay team originally came fourth during the 2020 event, but were upgraded to third after British relay member CJ Ujah was found guilty of a doping violation – meaning his team were stripped of their silver medals.
« I am very proud that this medal is a milestone in our Chinese athletic history, because it is the first medal. It is not easy, » Xie added. « We have been working towards this goal all the time. It also tells us not to give up until the last minute, because you never know what the result will be. »
Xie and Tokyo teammates Tang Xingqiang, Su Bingtian, and Wu Zhizhiang were awarded bronze medals in a special ceremony by the Chinese Olympic Committee. »
