« 16-year-old Iranian student Armita Geravand was seen collapsing on a train platform on Sunday, before being hospitalised where she reportedly remains in a coma according to human rights activists.
Security camera footage from the Tehran metro shows Geravand being carried off the train by other girls and placed on the platform, with her seemingly unconscious. Other people were seen coming to help. The footage does not show what took place on the train.
« According to the video we reviewed since her arrival at the platform, there is no physical and verbal conflict between her and other passengers or our personnel », said Head of the Tehran Metro Operating Company Masoud Dorosti.
Human rights associations claimed that Geravand was left in a coma after being assaulted by the morality police for not wearing a hijab. However, the authorities have denied the accusations and said that her condition was due to a drop in blood pressure, which caused her to faint and hit the side of the carriage.
The incident comes a year after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was taken into custody by the morality police for allegedly violating the strict hijab laws. The authorities said she’d had a heart attack, while activists claimed she was beaten. Subsequently, mass protests took place across the country. »
