« Bangladesh’s main opposition political party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), orchestrated a massive road march and rally stretching from Comilla to Chittagong on Thursday. Their primary demand is the resignation of the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Thousands of BNP leaders and activists actively participated in the 155-kilometer road march, led by the party’s General Secretary, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Footage from Dhaka captured thousands marching, brandishing BNP flags, with some protesters symbolically shackled to emphasise their protest.
Media reports indicate that the procession witnessed over 10,000 vehicles, including buses, cars, pickups, trucks, and motorcycles, joining the movement, with ordinary citizens also partaking in the event. The opposition party has embarked on a nationwide campaign to amass public support for their demands.
As Bangladesh approaches its upcoming parliamentary elections in less than three months, political tensions between the ruling Awami League and opposition groups have reached a boiling point.
Opposition parties, including the BNP, are steadfast in their demand for elections to be held under the supervision of a neutral caretaker government, while the Awami League insists on adhering to the constitution. The opposition has announced its intention to boycott any elections conducted under the auspices of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as was the case in 2014 and 2018.
The ongoing anti-government movement has led to clashes with the police, resulting in casualties, with reports indicating that 22 people have lost their lives thus far. »
