« Thousands of supporters from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gathered in Dhaka on Monday demanding the release of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and calling for the resignation of the current government.
The ongoing protests by opposition political parties, spearheaded by the BNP, are centred around their demand for the resignation of the Sheikh Hasina administration, which has held power for a remarkable 15 years. As both the government and opposition hold their ground, concerns of an impending political showdown in the lead-up to the elections loom large.
Begum Khaleda Zia, aged 77, has been in prison since 2018 due to corruption charges.
According to local media, her health has severely deteriorated, and she is currently receiving medical treatment in a local hospital. Her doctors have expressed grave concerns, stating that her condition is critical, and there is a risk of her passing away at any moment. Despite a plea to allow her to seek medical treatment abroad, the authorities have rejected the request.
The situation in Dhaka is uncertain and tense as both sides stick to their demands. »
