« More than 50 Palestinians were reported killed, and at least 120 were wounded, in an airstrike on a market in Gaza’s Jabalia camp on Monday, according to Palestinian health officials.
Footage shows extensive destruction, with debris and wreckage in the streets. Firefighters were seen working to extinguish the flames engulfing the buildings.
“As we were sitting in our homes, we heard an explosion that shook the entire residential block without any early warning, » shared Ibrahim Mokdad, a resident. « Three missiles were hit without any prior warning. We rushed to the site to see what happened and we came across numerous remains and many charred bodies whose features were indistinguishable. There have been over 50 martyrs. »
On Saturday, Palestinian group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, firing thousands of rockets into the country. On the ground, militants broke through into Israeli territory as part of what the group described as ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’.
Israel responded with airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and issued a formal declaration of war on Hamas, warning residents to leave their homes.
Hamas said the operation was due to the long-running Israeli blockade, raids on West Bank cities and other attacks, while Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed ‘mighty vengeance’ on the group.
At time of publication, nearly 1,300 people were reported dead in total according to figures from both the Israeli and Palestinian authorities, marking the most deadly escalation of the ongoing conflict in decades. According to the UN, over 120,000 Palestinians have been displaced during the current fighting. »
