« Hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Athens on Monday as fighting continued in Gaza following the surprise Hamas attack on Israel.
Footage shows protesters waving Palestinian flags and holding placards with slogans such as ‘Stop the Gaza Blockade’.
« In Greece, we have a tradition of solidarity with the people who resist occupation. That’s why we are here, for the victory of the resistance of the Palestinian people,” a demonstrator said.
« The Greek and European people, as well as the global community, only pay attention when Israelis are killed and not when we are killed on an everyday basis,” added a second protester.
The demonstration was organised by members of the Palestinian community in Athens and other activist groups.
Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, October 7, firing thousands of rockets as militants broke through into Israeli territory as part of what the group described as ‘Operation Al-Aqsa Flood’.
Israel responded with airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and issued a formal declaration of war on Hamas, warning residents in Gaza to leave their homes.
Hamas said the operation was due to the long-running Israeli blockade, raids on West Bank cities and other attacks, while Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed ‘mighty vengeance’ on the group.
At the time of publication, over 1,100 have been reported dead across both sides in the most deadly escalation of the ongoing conflict in decades. »
