Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro had a patriotic message for his supporters, as he launched his re-election campaign at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanazinho arena on Sunday. « We, the military, have sworn to give our lives for our homeland, » said Bolsonaro. « Everyone here has sworn to give their lives for their freedom, repeat it with me, I swear to give my life for my freedom, » he continued. Bolsonaro, a former military officer himself, is being challenged by left-wing former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. The fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and fuel costs are set to dominate the debate, while the current President also warned of the danger of outside influences on the country. « We don’t want Brazil dominated by another power, but we have other powers with an eye on Brazil, » said Bolsonaro. Lula is currently just over 10 points ahead in the opinion polls, ahead of the vote on October 2.
