Retired residents painted colourful patterns for an art festival in Madrid’s Lavapies neighbourhood on Thursday. A group of about 15 senior citizens gathered at Wanderer, Daniel Chong’s concept store and atelier, and participated in the festival, as can be seen in the footage filmed on Thursday. « Very nice, we are having a very nice morning and giving joy to the neighbourhood and now that the pandemic is gone, it seems, let’s see if we can bring some joy to the neighbourhood, » said Pilar, a retired resident participating in the artistic event. The artistic work was carried out collaboratively by the Drawing and Painting class of the Municipal Senior Citizens centres of the Central District. Retired residents painted the window of the store with multicoloured patterns. « This is a very eclectic neighbourhood and it occurred to us 9 years ago that we could imitate other festivals with interventions on the facades as there are in Paris, Berlin and in these places, » told the organiser of the event Mercedes Saracho. She mentioned that last year they wanted to pay tribute to the elderly, who had suffered so much during the COVID-19 pandemic, so the pensioners were able to bring joy to the storefront with their graffiti. « But this year they have asked us to intervene with a work of theirs and we have left this window for them to do it today and the work is called « Alegria » (happiness), which is a little bit what we all need at this time, » Saracho added. Last year the seniors of Madrid also participated in this artistic initiative.
