The Netherlands has presented an ambitious sustainable project at Expo 2020 in Dubai on Sunday, which harvests its own water, energy and food. The Dutch pavilion features a 19-metre (62 feet) food cone, which houses more than 9,000 edible plants including basil, watercress, tomatoes and mint in pots. This vertical farm is irrigated with water harvested from the air with the help of Dutch technology, powered by the sun via solar panels installed on the roof The « Rainmaker » technology – jointly developed by SunGlacier Technologies and Dutch artist Ap Verheggen – draws 800 litres (211 gallons) of water daily from the desert air. The Netherlands Pavilion at Expo 2020 has been named Best Sustainable Building Project of the Year at the Big 5 Construction Impact Awards for its temporary circular climate system. In order to keep the pavilion’s carbon footprint to a minimum, construction materials were rented locally and are reusable, recyclable and/or biodegradable. SHOT LIST
