Germany: Fierce clashes in Leipzig as riots erupt following police ban on ‘Day X’ demonstrations

Fierce clashes erupted in Leipzig ahead of a banned leftist protest, on Friday. Footage shows chaotic scenes in the city as scores of leftist protesters clashed with security forces, throwing bottles, fireworks and other objects at officers and police vehicles. The incidents come one day ahead of a banned demonstration in solidarity with leftist activist Lina E. who was sentenced to five years and three months in prison for being part of a criminal organisation and on assault charges. E. was convicted of planning and carrying out acts of violence against actual and alleged Neo-nazis. Despite a ban by authorities, left-wing organisations have called on activists across the country to join Day X’ demonstrations on Saturday. A heavy police presence was deployed in an attempt to prevent further escalation.
