« A new world record for the heaviest pumpkin was set at Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California’s Half Moon Bay on Monday.
Travis Geinger from the state of Minnesota drove a 2,749 pound (1,246 kg) gourd across the country to earn first place at this year’s edition, the 50th of its kind.
« We started the seeding in early April and we nurtured for 184 days, you can go that far but you can eat 150 gallons of water a day and pretty much checking up on it daily, » said Geinger
Former mayor of Half Moon Bay and co-initiator of the contest Al Adreveno shared details about the history of the contest and claimed Half Moon Bay was the ‘pumpkin capital of the world’.
The previous record of 2,702 lbs was set in Italy in 2021, according to the contest’s organisers.
The pumpkin will be displayed at the upcoming Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival. »
